Welsh physicist Sir Samuel Frederick Edwards, considered one of the fathers of condensed matter physics, passed away at the age of 87 on 7 May 2015.
Sir Edwards received ICTP's 2005 Dirac Medal that recognised, among other things, his fundamental contributions to polymer physics, spin glass theory and the physics of granular matter. He was the Cavendish Professor and the head of the Theory of Condensed Matter group at the University of Cambridge, where he continued to work as Emeritus Professor until recently.
The full citation of Sir Edwards' Dirac Medal is available on the Dirac Medal page.
