ICTP, together with the Italian Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), is organizing a week-long global event to take place from 26 to 31 May in honour of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ).
The highlight of the week will be a special conference titled “Quantum Physics: from Foundations to Emerging Technologies”, in collaboration with the Italian Accademia dei Lincei. The event, which is an IYQ global funded event, will take place from 28 to 30 May in Trieste. Among the speakers will be several Nobel laureates who have received the prestigious award for theoretical and experimental contributions related to quantum science and technology.
Other highlights include an outreach event to raise awareness about quantum science to the general public. The event, co-hosted by ICTP and SISSA, will be conducted by Nobel laureate William Phillips and will take place at a theatre in Trieste.
The full list of events is as follows:
- Monday 26 May: Quantum event organised by ICTP's partner institute in Brazil, the ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research (details coming soon)
- Tuesday 27 May: Event in Rome organised by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (details coming soon)
- Wednesday 28 - Friday 30 May: Joint ICTP-Lincei Conference on Quantum Physics: from Foundations to Emerging Technologies
- Thursday 29 May: Public event featuring Nobel Laureate William Phillips, Teatro Miela, Trieste (details coming soon)
- Saturday 31 May: SISSA event (details coming soon)
The United Nations proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) a century after the very foundations of the theory were formulated. IYQ recognizes the revolutionary impact of quantum mechanics on science and on society at large. Quantum science will be critical to sustainable development and has the potential to help us tackle many of the societal challenges highlighted by the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
