Acknowledging the importance of quantum science and the need for a wider awareness of its past and future impact, the United Nations proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ).
A century after the very foundations of the theory were formulated, this initiative recognizes the revolutionary impact of quantum mechanics on science and on society at large. Quantum science will be critical to sustainable development and has the potential to help us tackle many of the societal challenges highlighted by the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
ICTP is proud to contribute to this year’s celebrations with a number of quantum-related activities. These include a "quantum week" in late May featuring a special conference entitled “Quantum Physics: from Foundations to Emerging Technologies”, organized in collaboration with the Italian Accademia dei Lincei. The event will take place from 28 to 30 May in Trieste, Italy. Among the speakers, the event will feature 10 Nobel laureates who have received the prestigious award for theoretical and experimental contributions related to quantum science and technology.
Other ICTP events throughout the year include the following:
- School on Quantum Topology and Hyperbolic Geometry (9 - 13 June 2025)
- Youth in High-Dimensions: Recent Progress in Machine Learning, High-Dimensional Statistics and Inference & How creative is Generative AI? Perspectives from Science and Philosophy (3 - 9 July 2025)
- Workshop on New Pathways in Exploration of Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity beyond Supersymmetry IV (7 - 11 July 2025)
- Joint ICTP-WE Heraeus Conference on Non-equilibrium Quantum Statistical Physics (21 - 23 July)
- Joint ICTP-WE Heraeus School and Workshop on Advances in Quantum Matter: Pushing the Boundaries (4 - 15 August 2025)
- School on Quantum Dynamics of Matter, Light and Information (18 August - 5 September)
- School on Quantum Matter (1 - 12 December)
