Dr. Art McDonald, director of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) in Ontario, Canada, will give a lecture at ICTP this Thursday, 19 March, on "Particle physics and astrophysics with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and the new SNOLAB."
SNO houses a neutrino detector located 2 kilometres underground in a nickel mine, and is run by an international collaboration of researchers. The observatory gained fame in 2001 and 2002, after experiments carried out there established that neutrinos change their properties as they travel from the core of the Sun to the Earth. Before this discovery, scientists detected only a fraction of the expected quantity of neutrinos coming from the Sun.
Dr. McDonald's lecture begins at 16:00 in the Seminar Room of ICTP's Leonardo Building.
