ICTP and the IAEA are cooperating for the next 3 weeks to train
young professionals from developing countries in management
techniques for nuclear technology.
The First ICTP-IAEA School of Nuclear Energy Management, held in
Trieste, runs from 8 to 26 November.
The purpose of the capacity-building school is to build future
leadership in managing nuclear energy programs, particularly in
countries that are new IAEA member states and that seek to develop
nuclear power or other nuclear applications.
As the demand for nuclear technology increases--for applications
ranging from energy production to medicine--so does the need for a
greatly expanded global cadre of nuclear professionals. The School
directly addresses that need.
Over the next 3 weeks, participants will gain awareness of the
most recent developments in nuclear energy and the IAEA specific
knowledge and broad international perspective on issues related to
the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
ICTP Assistant Director Claudio Tuniz, the course local organizer,
pointed out that while the course is heavily focussed on nuclear
safety, security and management issues, it also draws on ICTP's
expertise in advanced studies in material science, which are
critical for the development of safer, more economic and
proliferation-free power reactors. ICTP also models seismic risks
and environmental impacts of extreme climatic events, important in
planning the development of nuclear infrastructure.

website.
