ICTP Director Fernando Quevedo was inducted as an Associate
Fellow of TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world,
at its 22nd General Meeting held in Trieste from 21 to 23
November.
The designation of TWAS Associate Fellow recognizes scientists who
have made important, internationally accepted contributions to
their fields and to the promotion of science in developing
countries.
Quevedo, a Guatemalan national, is a well-known theoretical
particle physicist with wide-ranging research interests in string
theory, phenomenology and cosmology. He has been awarded the
Wolfson Merit Award, a Dotorate Honoris Causa from Universidad de
San Carlos de Guatemala and Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, a
John Solomon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and the 1998 ICTP
Prize in recognition of his important contributions to superstring
theory.
Quevedo became director of ICTP in 2009 and is the founder and
coordinator of the International Network of Guatemalan
Scientists.
