To promote doctoral studies and the mobility of young scientists
from developing countries: this is the objective of a new
cooperative agreement between ICTP and SISSA, who will create a new
academic programme leading to a PhD.
The accord was signed on Monday 28 February by ICTP Director
Fernando Quevedo and SISSA Director Guido Martinelli.
The agreement aims to provide a high level of education in physics
and mathematics for talented young students from developing
countries, drawing on the strengths of the two institutions: ICTP
has nearly five decades of experience in providing education,
research and training opportunities for scientists from developing
countries, while SISSA has nearly 30 years of experience in
administering doctoral programmes in physics and mathematics.
"ICTP is very pleased to work with SISSA in expanding the Centre's
academic offerings to students from developing countries," said
Quevedo, adding, "Together, we can provide an environment of
academic excellence to ensure that scientists from all corners of
the world receive the highest level of education, substantially
strengthening the international research activities at Trieste and
contributing to build sustainable science in their own
countries."
"We are particularly proud of this agreement because not only does
it reinforce the collaboration between ICTP and SISSA, but it also
contributes strongly to the transfer of science and technology
knowledge to developing countries," commented Martinelli, adding,
"Moreover, ICTP is the ideal partner to help us increase our base
of international doctoral students."
