Modern applications of quantum mechanics--from quantum
cryptology to quantum computing--are just a few of the topics to be
discussed at the "Workshop on New Trends in Quantum Dynamics and
Quantum Entanglement" taking place at ICTP from 21 to 25
February.
The workshop, which is co-sponsored by ICTP, the University of
Trieste, the Trieste Physics Consortium and the Institute for
Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Austria, has attracted more
than 150 scientists from 25 countries, most of them young
researchers interested in the interdisciplinary nature of the
field.
"This is a fast growing field, and there is a lot of interest in
new potentials, both conceptually and in applications," said
workshop organizer Angelo Bassi of the University of Trieste.
ICTP Director Fernando Quevedo provided a welcoming address at the
workshop's opening, followed by an historical overview of the field
at ICTP by GianCarlo Ghirardi, Professor Emeritus, University of
Trieste and co-leader of ICTP's Associates Programme, while Vahid
Karimipour, a professor at Sharif University, Tehran and a
co-organizer of the workshop, provided an Iranian perspective of
the field.
The workshop was preceded by a week-long school for physics
students to provide them with background material about quantum
dynamics and entanglement theory at a graduate level.
