ICTP's Marie Curie Library has inaugurated an exhibition on the
renowned scientist and philosopher Rudjer Josip Boskovic to mark
the 300th anniversary of his birth. It can be viewed at the
Library's entrance, on the first floor of the Leonardo
Building.
Rudjer Boskovic was born in Dubrovnik (Croatia) on 18 May 1711. He
is famous for his atomic theory and for many important
contributions to astronomy, including the first geometric procedure
for computing the orbit of a planet from three observations of its
position.
He authored about 70 publications, the most important of which,
'Theoria Philosophiae Naturalis' (Theory of Natural Philosophy) is
displayed in full text. The exhibition also includes biographical
data, selected papers, photographs and various images, and an
illustrated biography of the great scientist. A poster portrait of
Boskovic was graciously donated by the Physics Library of the
University of Zagreb.
