Mulugeta Bekele, a former ICTP Senior Associate, has been
awarded the American Physical Society's 2012 Andrei Sakharov Prize.
Bekele, from Ethiopia, is the first African physicist to receive
the award.
The prize cites Bekele's "tireless efforts in defense of human
rights and freedom of expression and education anywhere in the
world, and for inspiring students, colleagues and others to do the
same."
Bekele was a Senior Associate from 1999 to 2004, working closely
with ICTP's Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics section. He
has also attended many ICTP workshops and conferences.
