ICTP's 2013 Salam Lecture series, taking place from 28 January to 1 February 2013, will feature talks by renowned theoretical biophysicist William Bialek.

The week-long lecture series is titled "The physics of life: Searching for theories", and will be held in ICTP's Main Lecture Hall starting at 16:30. Bialek will deliver five lectures on:

  • Taming the phenomena
  • Finding signals in noise
  • Living on a diet of bits
  • More than the sum of its parts
  • Making predictions

The lectures, which are open to the public, will be streamed live on ICTP's website.

Bialek, whose research explores problems in the interface of physics and biology, has done groundbreaking work on the optimization of biological processes in the brain and in embryonic development. His experience in the field is especially relevant to ICTP's new research initiatives, which include quantitative systems biology. Bialek is a professor at Princeton University, USA, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, and a member of the Centre's scientific council.

ICTP's Salam Lecture Series is an annual presentation of talks by renowned, active scientists. The aim is to showcase important research developments as well as provide a visionary forward view.
