SISSA and ICTP are now offering a first set of training courses in the area of High Performance Computing (HPC), in preparation for the launch of their forthcoming joint master in HPC, which will officially start in the next academic year.
The trial HPC courses are part of the syllabus of the master in HPC and are offered this academic year free to the scientific community. The goal is to test and validate the courses by offering them to motivated and interested people.
Results of this trial run will help to improve the quality and to better identify requirements of the user community. The list of courses available in autumn 2013, with all the details (syllabus, schedule, faculty, location) is available at: http://hpc-master.sissa.ictp.it
On the HPC e-learning site, it is also possible to register as a user and then enroll in the courses of interest. Seating is limited and will be offered on a first come, first serve basis.
The idea to offer a masters programme in HPC was put in place at the launch of the HPC cluster on 13 July 2012. Housed in the old SISSA building in Via Beirut No. 2-4, Trieste, the cluster has an operational capacity of 130 TeraFlop (one TeraFlop is equal to a million million operations per second), an archiving capacity of about 200 TeraBytes, for a total of 32 million computing hours a year, making it the second most powerful computing centre in Italy.
The HPC masters programme is the only one in Italy, and the courses will be closely related to the PhD curricula in physics, mathematics and neurosciences currently offered by SISSA.
