Science for the Masses

This weekend, starting on Friday 27 September, ICTP will participate in two public science events taking place in Trieste:

• Researchers' Night (La Notte dei Ricercatori): Known locally by the acronym NEAR (North-East Researchers' Night), Researchers' Night encompasses a full day of free, fun and interesting activities for people of all ages. ICTP will have a display promoting its 3D Printing Laboratory's efforts to keep the environment clean. The main attraction will be a recycling "factory" called the Perpetual Plastic Project that recycles used plastic cups into filament for 3D printers. The 3D Printing Laboratory has created hundreds of science education objects, many of which will be on display at the ICTP booth, where the Centre's scientists will be on hand to answer the public's questions about the objects. Other activities ICTP will participate in at Researchers' Night include:
• • a showing of the documentary "Unwired" about its wireless networking training in Africa as part of a session on "Seminandoscienza: Trieste nel cuore dell'Africa";
  • the participation of two of its scientists in a programme of scientists' dialogues about their work and their backgrounds called "I Ricercatori si Raccontano";
  • an exhibit of photographs portraying researchers from around the world called "Il Giro del Mondo in 80 Click";
  • ping-pong tournaments;
  • live music by a band of scientist-musicians.

• TRIESTE NEXT, the European Science Research Forum: Under the theme WATERWISE, this three-day event, running from 27 to 29 September, features an extensive programme of  scientists, experts, lecturers and many other professionals who will discuss--what else?--water. From building a naval park in Trieste, to the amount of water in our bodies, the event offers a world of knowledge. In addition, there will be guided tours, exhibits, videos, plays, art installations, a fashion show, music and much, much more.
