Award recognises contributions to elementary particle physics
Luciano Maiani wins the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize

Luciano Maiani, ICTP's Scientific Council Chair, was awarded the 2013 Bruno Pontecorvo Prize on 20 February 2014 by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) and Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems in Dubna, Russia.

The 2013 prize recognises Maiani's outstanding contribution to particle physics, in particular his work on weak interaction physics and neutrino physics. Maiani, the winner of ICTP's 2007 Dirac Medal, has not only made seminal contributions to advancing particle physics but also has played crucial roles in important scientific institutions. He was the Director General of CERN, the President of Italy's INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), and President of Italy's National Research Council, CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche). The prize was presented at the 115th session of the JINR Scientific Council.

JINR and Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems in Dubna, Russia, established the Pontecorvo Prize in 1995. The prize is named after Bruno Pontecorvo, the distinguished Italian-born scientist  who emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1950 and continued his research on the decay of the muon and on neutrinos; it honours distinguished scientists for significant contributions to elementary particle physics. Previous recipients include Alexei Smirnov, Emeritus Staff Associate at ICTP.
