He developed the alternating current electrical supply system
and invented modern radio and fluorescent lighting--not to mention
the famous Tesla coil--yet Nikola Tesla died in obscurity and
destitution.
His brilliant mind makes for a compelling life story, one that was
recreated by students from local Trieste middle school Corsi, along
with staff and scientists from ICTP, in a performance titled
"Tesla: Autobiography of a Genius". The play, held in ICTP's Main
Lecture Hall, traced the life of the eccentric scientist, from his
early days in Croatia to his later life in New York. Subtitles
projected on a screen above the performance ensured that all of
ICTP's international staff and visitors could follow the Italian
dialogue.
The performance included live music, several magic tricks, and a
demonstration of a real Tesla coil.
"This was a good example of collaboration between administrative
and scientific staff together with the Trieste community, which is
very positive for ICTP, especially as we celebrate the Centre's
50th anniversary this year," said ICTP Director Fernando
Quevedo.
