Honoring Euler and Lagrange

New lecture room named after famous mathematicians will be inaugurated on 23 April
Honoring Euler and Lagrange

ICTP will inaugurate a new lecture hall and a suite of classrooms after a major renovation of space used by its Postgraduate Diploma Programme.

The newly refurbished lecture hall, housed in the Centre's Leonardo Building, has been named “Euler-Lagrange” in honour of the two renowned scientists whose collaborative work has had a lasting impact on both physics and mathematics. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 23 April at 14:00 hrs.

In honour of the inauguration, ICTP will hold a colloquium by  Professor Alberto Cogliati of the University of Padua, entitled Joseph-Louis Lagrange: A Glimpse into His Life and Contributions, offering a concise overview of the life and work of Joseph-Louis Lagrange, one of the most influential mathematicians and physicists of the18th century. Special attention will be given to Lagrange'sscientific correspondence with Leonhard Euler, which played a crucial role in shaping his early ideas and establishing his reputation across Europe. Cogliati will also explore his major contributions to analysis, mechanics, and number theory, with a focus on his Théorie des fonctions analytiques.

Alberto Cogliati is a Full Professor of the History of Mathematics at the University of Padua. His main research interests focus on the history of differential geometry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among his recent publications: Breve Storia della Geometria non-euclidea, dall’Antichità a Poincaré (Carocci, 2024).

The colloquium will be held before the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
