How do quantum strings clang?
This question has been addressed in a Letter published in the April issue of Physical Review Research https://journals.aps.org/prresearch/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.7.L022016 by a research collaboration which includes ICTP Postgraduate Diploma student (2023-2024 academic year) Weyner Ccuiro, ICTP Simons Research Associate Luis Foa Torres, IFW Dresden scientist Dmitry Efremov and ICTP CMSP scientist Mikhail Kiselev.
A nanomechanical device using a suspended quantum wire with a strong spin-orbit interaction is proposed for detecting quantum phase transitions. The work explores the interplay between electron’s orbital degrees of freedom and bending elastic vibrational modes of the quantum wire. The theory predicts an emergence of a soft Goldstone type - II mode and provides a framework for detecting quantum critical points.
