Call for CIMPA-ICTP Fellowships 2026 "Research in Pairs"

The CIMPA-ICTP "Research in Pairs" fellowship program supports mathematicians from developing countries by funding their visits to Europe to collaborate with a colleague. The two researchers will work together on a well-defined research project, primarily at the European colleague’s institution. Priority will be given to applicants who remain scientifically active despite challenging circumstances, such as heavy teaching, supervision, or administrative responsibilities, and those who have had limited travel opportunities in the past five years.

Who can apply

- The candidate must a researcher who defended their PhD at least 3 years ago and who has been employed in one or several academic institutions in a developing country [1] for the past 5 years at the time of the application;

- The European colleague is a researcher holding a PhD in mathematics who throughout the candidate’s stay will be based in one of the following countries: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland;

- During their time in Europe, the selected candidate will record/broadcast a mathematics mini-course of approximately 8 hours, in French or English, targeting students in their master's or at the beginning of their PhD. The lectures will become a reference for all students who want to learn about the topic of the lectures. This will therefore be considered an important part of the application and we encourage candidates to prepare it with great care. The lectures will be recorded during their stay, generally at the end of their collaboration period.

- During the submission process, the host colleague will be asked to provide further details about the project and to upload a supporting letter for this application. Note that the letter is of crucial importance to evaluate the commitment of the host and the success of the application. Without such letter the application will not be considered.

[1] If your country does not appear in this list and if you think that the specificities of your location or career should be taken into consideration, please explain your situation by writing to director@cimpa.info. You will be informed if you can proceed further with your application.

Entitlements

The amount of the support will be determined based on the location of the selected candidate and on the duration of their visit and can be up to a maximum of 10,000 euros. It can only cover the candidate's personal costs, including transportation, accommodation, insurance, visa etc. during the entire visit.

The minimum duration for the stay is 5 weeks to collaborate with the host at their institute. An extra-week must be added to record/broadcast the 8 hours mini-course.
